In May this year I decided to leave the cool climate of Tasmania and take off to a warmer part of the world – the Islands of Hawaii!

My three week holiday was divided between the island of ‘Oahu’ and ‘The Big Island’.  The biggest difficulty of any trip away is trying to see as much of your destination as possible and balancing this with actually enjoying the destination itself!

With 16.5 kgs of camera gear in tow I arrived in Oahu. My initial impression of Wakikii was that of a big, busy city whose population was divided between tourists and people trying to get money out of tourists. It didn’t take me too long to figure out that I would need to get out of the city to give this place a chance. Just a few minutes out of the city in a hire car and my opinion of this location had changed already. Beautiful volcanic mountains and calm azure ocean lapping onto black rock beaches.

The following week I flew to the Big Island and fell in love with its landscape!

Whilst in Hawaii I took many underwater photographs.  These adventures are covered in another article (Hawaiiunderwater adventures). Above the water I continued my adventures, my two stand out things were, visiting a volcano and driving down the ‘chain of craters’ and flying over an active volcano and its lava fields. Centuries of lava and volcanic activity have shaped these islands, creating a landscape I had never seen before and simply couldn’t wait to photograph!
