Recently I mentioned that I had converted one of my digital cameras into a black and white infra red. That means that the camera does not record visible light but only light that falls within the infra red spectrum, this information is then processed into black and white. Traditionally this was all obviously done with film. It’s always been a bit of a hit and miss event that was very inconvenient – requiring complete darkness to load the film into your camera and then you were always at the mercy of the developing chemicals. Thanks to digital, that’s all changed!

By removing the IR filter in a conventional digital SLR (D200) and replacing it with a filter that only allows infra red light to pass – hey presto – an easy to use infra red camera!

Look carefully at the images here – they are not simply black and white. Green foliage in sunlight is usually rendered snow white, shaded areas complete black.
It’s beautiful stuff and very artistic looking. I have really enjoyed being a little more creative with these images.

I’d love to know what you think. I’m launching a new product line in a couple of weeks and don’t be surprised if you see a few IR images!
